I love the simplicity of quick breads. They are perfect to whip up on days when you just want something sweet, but aren’t up for a lot of work. Like many of you, I’ve spent the last few weeks making lots of cookies so today I just wanted something homey but delicious. This Dairy, Egg and Nut Free Applesauce Bread is super easy with ingredients I already had in my pantry. Unlike a lot of Applesauce Bread recipes, it isn’t too dense or greasy. It is perfectly spiced with a touch of nutmeg and cinnamon. One of my favorite things about this bread is that freezes really well and makes two loaves; perfect if you want to save the second loaf for another day.
I also want to thank everyone for the Merry Christmas wishes and am so happy that many of you enjoyed an assortment of my recipes for the holidays. Nothing makes me happier than to know your families enjoyed traditional holiday treats that are also allergen safe. I promise I’ll keep working hard on new ones, and love your continued feedback and suggestions for variations. Enjoy your final week of 2009!
Happy Baking!
Dairy, Egg and Nut Free Applesauce Bread

4 T. water
1 c. vegetable oil
1/3 c. soy or rice milk
2 1/4 c. unsweetened applesauce
4 c. unbleached all purpose flour
2 1/4 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 T. salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray two 8-inch loaf pans generously with dairy free baking spray.
In a mixer fitted with the paddle attachement, combine the sugar and water until mixed. Add oil, soy milk and applesauce and mix on low until thoroughly incorporated.
In a seperate medium bowl, combine flour through salt and mix with a wire whisk. Add to applesauce mixture and divide batter between the two prepared loaf pans. Bake 50 – 60 minutes or until golden brown and a cake tester comes out clean. Cool and serve.

This looks great. I bet you could make a banana bread by adapting this recipe!
Thanks so much. I just slid your Oatmeal Muffins into the oven.
By the way I made your Emerald Isle Coffee cake and took it to my Mom’s house for brunch on Christmas and it was huge hit. My husband said it was the best coffee cake he ever ate. Thanks.
For the evening of Christmas day we visited my in laws, and I made Emerald Isle Cake and the Apple pie. People were stunned. They said it tasted fabulous, especially the Emerald Isle Cake. Everyone wanted the recipe, and they could not believe it was egg free, dairy free, and nut free. My daughter was especially fond of the apple pie. She ate her piece and proceeded to eat her dad’s as well!
Kelly, this applesauce bread looks amazing. My husband looked at the picture and started salivating. He loves anything with apple and cinnamon, and has been asking for an apple cinnamon loaf for a while. I’m going to try this one tonight. My little girl loves applesauce. And I love the fact that it freezes well.
I’m looking forward to trying this recipe out. Do you have a preference for a milk substitute? We’ve been nut & egg free for almost 3 years for our 4 year old but now we are taking dairy out of her diet too. Once again I’m at such a loss for what to feed her. I’d also be curious to hear what brand of soy or rice milk you use. Have you shared any lunch or dinner recipes in the past of what you feed your allergic child or do you mainly share sweets? Thanks!!
Thanks everyone for the super sweet comments…especially about my mom’s Emerald Isle Coffee Cake. It is a wonderful tribute to my mom, who would have been so happy that her recipe is still enjoyed by so many today….allergen free of course! Lisita, I love Silk Plain Soy Milk, and use it for everything. Everyone has their own taste preferences, so by all means, choose a substitute that you like best. In regard to lunch or dinner recipes, I have been asked that question many times, and no, I haven’t shared those types of recipes on this site, yet. My passion is 100 percent baking, but I do have some wonderful family recipes that I’ve made over the years for my kids. Out of neccessity, allergy mamas have to cook practically everything at home…breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I’ve developed some great standby favorites. But I think my heart will always lie with something sweet….
Thanks Kelly, I’ll give that brand of soy milk a try! I am a baker at heart too and wish the other meals came as easily!

Delish! I made this tonight and both my hubby and I enjoyed it! I’m sharing some with a neighbor – I’m betting she’ll never guess it’s egg and dairy free. Thanks for a great recipe!
Kelly I have a school question for you if you don’t mind.
My son is starting preschool in the fall and in January we have to officially register.
Of course I am overwhelmed and nervous about sending him to school but my question is did your son wear some kind of medical alert braclet when he was in preschool? Does he wear one now? Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Just wanted to say that I love your blog and recipes. MY 2 year old has a diagnosed peanut allergy/ asthma and my 2 month old nursing son has a dairy intolerance…. and I have a sweet tooth! Thanks for all the great recipes!!
This applesauce bread is amazing!!!!! I made it tonight with a gluten free flour mix (my 16 month old is allergic to wheat as well), and it is the most moist and tasty recipe I have tried since beginning this challenge of allergies 11 months ago. My boys, who are allergy free, will never know the difference. They will eat it up! THANK YOU so much for sharing! My daughter, Elizabeth, thanks you too
Thanks so much Tanya…that is so nice of you to say and I’m sure your 2-year-old will LOVE these treats!
Thanks so much Susan! That is so nice of you to say! Did you make your own gluten free mix or did you buy one? I love that the recipe worked out for both!

My son proclaimed “this is delicious mom!” These are beautiful words to a mother’s ears. I love being able to bake homemade goodies that won’t kill my son.
On another note, do you have a copy of a letter that you sent to your children’s school when you pre-registered them? We will be facing this in August and I am dreading the cafeteria ordeal. How would I go about getting some of the food items changed on the menu? Thanks for any help that you can give me!
Gluten free flour blend : 2 cups rice flour, 2/3 cup potato starch, 1/3 cup tapioca flour
Just wanted to weigh in on the applesauce quick bread, I made some yesterday, and it was great! My family loves it, I took the second loaf over to my parents and they thought it was wonderful, also. Thanks for the great recipes!
Thanks so much for the feedback Jennifer! Isn’t it great to have two loaves?
I just made this, and it turned out great. I ordered your cookbook today, and I’m looking forward to getting it soon!!! Thank you so much for the help, as a working mom, putting in nearly 60 hours a week on projects, I love these quick/easy meals/snacks/ideas! Thank you again!!
Just tried this recipe and like everyone else, it was delicious! I have your cookbook too and have made many of these recipes and they have all been wonderful! Thank you so much for taking the time to develop these recipes and for sharing them as well. My allergy child is my third so to have a recipe that pleases all is so important!
Jen so happy you like it!! xo
