What a great and EASY recipe!! I have your cookbook and am sooooo thankful that you wrote it. I cannot tell you what a relief it is to find this entire community of moms developing recipes for their allergic children. When our son was first diagnosed with food allergies (we had him on nutramigen), the doctors had no direction for us. "Just don't use milk or eggs and he'll be fine." Wow...just wow at how much easier said than done that is.

I'll be making these cookies for K's easter party!

I made these when we had guests for the super bowl, and they were devoured! I was a little nervous b/c there is a bakery (Edgar's) here that is known for it's thumbprint cookies, and all of my guests know and love those thumbprints all too well. I was so happy these did not dissappoint!! Will make again and again!! Thanks Kelly! By the way, do these freeze well? We go to Edgar's for lunch, but can't get treats there anymore. I may keep a stash in the freezer to take when we go to Edgar's so my boys can have a yummy treat that looks like it came from behind the glass!

To Tanya (who was inquiring about soy/dairy)

I would suggest looking up vegan cookbooks that use seitan. I think this is a mostly gluten-based, so doing anything for those w/ celiac is kind of a no-no. I would also look into raw cooking, which is bound to have more veggies/fruit, but without an allergic risk. I would also recommed vegan chili- no dairy or soy! I buy Simply Organic seasoning, but I'm not sure if it has soy....

I know it must be so hard to cook for your daughter and son, but I'm sure that there will be a good way to nourish them both- without making it super hard on them OR you! :)

good luck!

Just made these cookie gems with light sifted spelt flour (my son is allergic to wheat and dairy). They've turned out beautifully. Thank you thank you thank you!

Now when my wee boy wakes up I can tempt him with something yummy and wholesome. He has pneumonia and isn't eating, but I'm hopeful the thumbprint cookies will have him interested!!

Have you ever thought about posting your dinner meal plans on your blog? I get my dessert/bread recipes from your blog for my nut free daughter and soy and dairy free son... but I am at such a loss for dinner recipes. I am going on 4 months now of being dairy and soy free and we are just eating the same boring things over and over again. All our favorites ( pizza, tacos, enchiladas etc have dairy in them). What do you feed your family for dinner? I have a list of my favorite food blogs where I used to get my dinner ideas but now that we are dairy and soy free this no longer works...

I'd love to know if the recipe works GF too, Collette! Post your results if you have time. I'm definately in a cookie mood, Kelly. Can't help it considering all of the goodies stacked up in the store for Valentine's! I like your cookie choice since it sounds like I can substitute the preserves with a fruity/sugary concoction of my own. Plus it's colorful! Thanks!

Thanks so much everyone! SOOOO excited to hear your feedback! I think these are the perfect treats to make on a snowy day. The dough comes together in a minute and the kids really feel like they are making the entire cookie themselves after they do the "thumbprint" and filling. Thanks too, Liz...I also love the chocolate chips in the center. It gives just the right amount of chocolate flavor and the kids have a fun time putting them in the hole. Susan and Carla, I think these are going to my son's classroom too, just because they are so easy don't require rolling and cutting. Julie, I use Fleischman's UNSALTED ONLY margarine (the salted version contains dairy). I also like Earth Balance Vegan Buttery Sticks, available at Whole Foods. Have fun!!

Kelly these look great - my biggest problem now is trying to decide which treat to bring in to my son's Valentines Day party! Cupcakes, cookies, whoopie pies - how to decide! Plus this type of cookie with the jam is my husbands favorite! Hope you're feeling good!

I am so excited to have come across your website! My 3 year old is allergic to milk and peanuts. I've been looking for some baking ideas and all of your recipes look so great.
Can I ask what type of stick dairy free margarine you use? I have only used the tub Smart Balance Light which works well for some things, like banana bread but not so well for cookies, etc. I have not come across any 'stick' varieties in my dairy free shopping.
