thanks so much for your feedback and i am so sorry you had trouble with these. i always tell people that baking is a science, and it is very important to follow my recipes to the letter, because they simply won't turn out the same. i make this cookie at least once a week, if not twice, and sometimes more, and never have the issues you state. Please give it another shot with just sub. cup for cup of your gluten free flour blend (although i can't guarantee it will work the same as wheat flour), and do everything else exactly the same.

Hi Kelly,
My almost 2 year old son has an egg, milk, peanut, shellfish and wheat allergy (although he was just recently re-tested and wheat came up as negative) and I have recently purchased your book. Because we are slowly reintroducing wheat into his diet, I have only tried one recipe out of your book...the chocolate chip cookie. For some reason they did not turn out right...more than likely my fault, because I am not very good in the kitchen. I used a cookie scoop to put the dough on the sheet, but they did not spread out after baked. They looked exactly the same as when I put them in the oven (a one inch diameter scoop of dough), they did not spread out like your picture. Was I supposed to flatten them? Also, I put them in the oven for 12 mins (they were slightly golden brown). I only varied the amount of chocolate chips (I used 1/2 cup instead of 1 cup), and decreased the sugars slightly (by about 3 tbsps each) and everything else was the same. They were extremely sweet, and rock hard, perfectly formed 1" half rounds.
Any hints? I am not used to allergen free baked good, so maybe this is the way it is supposed to taste?
Thanks!

Dear Kelly,
I have a three year old boy named Nathaniel, and he is allergic to dairy, eggs (cooked and uncooked), and nuts. We just had our yearly allergy appointment, and he still remains allergic to all dairy and eggs. The only thing that he is now able to eat is fish, so it was really hard for me to imagine his Halloween bag, a can of tuna just doesn't cut it. I grew up with a mom who loved to cook and bake...and I was totally discouraged and sad when I realized my son could not have baked treats. When I came across your cookbook, I was thrilled....and more elated when I made your cupcakes with fire engines on top for his birthday, most importantly, my son couldn't get enough of them...even my own family members who are not allergic loved them!! I have made your blueberry bread, and that was another hit! I wanted to thank you so much for taking the time and providing great receipes for children and adults who have food allergies. You have made me feel so empowered as a mom, and a baker. No longer do I feel that my son will have to sit out when everyone is getting a treat! Thank you from the bottom of my heart....and stomach!
Sincerely,
Christine, Doug and Nathaniel

Kelly,

I'd like to thank you so much for your blog. My son (almost 2 now) was diagnosed a year ago as being peanut, egg, and SEVERE dairy allergic. I feared for a long time about being "that mom" with "that kid" who ruins everything in school becuase of his allergies. Reading your posts have made me realize - it's his life and happiness that are on the line, and other kids and moms are just going to have to get over it. This past week my son accidentally got a sip of his sister's milk when she left it on the table. After a huge reaction that involved and Epi-Pen, an ambulence and a night spent in the hospital he's fine again, but I don't think parents of non-allergic kids understand what we go though. And restaurants don't understand HOW vital it is that we have complete information (which is why we don't eat out much anymore, either).

Thanks to your posts, we're going to be involved in the study at Children's Memorial in Chicago this summer. And my son will have a great birthday cake using your recipes. And I'll continue to feel like I've got some Mom-Support out there because of your blog.

A friend told me about your book(actually about your chocolate chip bar recipe)...and I just had to check your site out!!!
We have 2 children...an almost 5 year old and an almost 16 month old!!! My son(almost 5) has life-threatening food allergies to dairy and peanut, as well as asthma. We found out at 9 months when we gave him yogurt and ended up in the ER.
I LOVE that you have written and published a book with such FUN and DELICIOUS recipes...safe for children with food allergies(and their siblings alike)!!!
We will be starting preschool next year(WOW, YIKES)...so I have to tell you...reading your posts on dealing with schools, etc...well, it has truly inspired me!!! To say I am nervous is an UNDERSTATEMENT!!!
Thank you for your heart to advocate...and for your willingness to put your pencil to paper and share your recipes!!!

Kelly,

I want to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for such a great cookbook!! I have a daughter who has multiple severe food allergies, while the rest of us are allergy-free. It has been so challenging, disappointing and frustrating to make things that everyone likes and appreciates. Before I found your book, I can't tell you how many disasters I had trying to make something yummy for my daughter. There were so many times I felt so sad that I couldn't make something for her that she loved and was waiting in anticipation for or would request. That never happened until I found your book.

I have made so many recipes from your book, and every single one of them has turned out great and is loved by all of us! It's such a relief to have a "go-to" recipe book, and I know in a pinch I will most likely have all the ingredients needed. Now I feel confident that when I want to make something I know it will be delicious and eaten by all! Oh - and now I get requests! YAY!! :) I love that we now have pizza parties, doughnut Saturdays, big chocolate chip cookie birthday cakes and so much more.

You don't even know us, yet you've changed our world... I'm so grateful that you published this book and continue to share your talents!

Sincerely,
Tiffany

PS - could I ask you what you use as a condensed cream of chicken/mushroom soup? I really miss casseroles! :)

Kelly,

You have made my son the happiest boy in the world! Earlier this week I happened to notice your book on display at the library. I brought it home to my 6 year old who is allergic to dairy, eggs and tree nuts. While I have a wide repertoire of goodies that we bake, often times there are also things that he can't enjoy. He is quite understanding and knows the consequences of eating a forbidden food.

Needless to say, he was so excited when I announced that I could make him ANYTHING in your cookbook. Not only is it free of all his allergies, everything can be made kosher as well! I gave him a package of flags to mark the recipes he wanted to try and he used the entire package.

We will be buying your book and I expect it to be well used. I just hope I don't gain too much weight in the process!

THANK YOU!

I cannot tell you how happy I am to have found this website! I have a little treasure who is allergic to eggs and nuts and have felt so limited to Jello treats and Rice Krispie treats! I feel like the world of baking I used to love so much can FINALLY be shared with her! Do you happen to have a cupcake recipe??

Thank you!!

Kelly,
We just checked out your book from our local library and love it so much that I'm ordering it for myself. 7 years ago we found out our daughter had multiple food allergies. She outgrew many of them, but still has severe allergies to eggs, peanuts and tree nuts. Never in a million years would I have I believed that today I'd be able to find allergy friendly foods in a regular grocery store and find such fabulous cookbooks from dedicated moms like you! We have come so far! I've collected many recipes over the years, but plan on giving a copy of your cookbook to my daughter someday also!
Thank you so much for your dedication,
Amy

Kelly,

Thank you so much for your wonderful cookbook. My 10-year-old son and I bought it yesterday at the allergist's office. We stopped at the grocery store on the way home, and today he had so much fun making the lemon cake recipe (with mom support, of course). He has proudly shown his new recipe book to everyone who has entered our house. What a blessing to have him enjoy cooking since as you say about your son, he will need to learn. I love the straightforward information in the beginning of your book that he is now old enough to start owning. Thank you for making a great cookbook for beginning cooks as well as moms.

CJ,

I have a blog that has kid friendly recipes for meals, desserts and snacks. All of the recipes are at least egg, dairy and nut free because they are the foods my daughter is allergic to. I just started the blog this month, but I add a new recipe every day.

I ADORE your cookbook and recipes!!! Each recipe I make the entire family devours!!! Thanks for providing all of us with safe and scrumptious eats:) I was wondering if you can recommend a cookbook or website (or perhaps one of your readers can) that provides allergy friendly recipes for lunch/dinner. Our youngest is allergic to eggs, dairy, oats, turkey, rice, & peanuts.

Hi Kelly,

Just ordered your cookbook and ca not wait to get it in the mail. I do have a quick question. My kids do not have a dairy allergy but are allergic to eggs & peanut/tree nuts. Would I just use products that have the dairy (i.e. regular sour cream instead of dairy free sour cream) in them when the recipe calls for an item? Thank you for all that you do your other families that are all just trying to do what is right for our children. God Bless You.

Hi Kelly,

I found out about you through the allergiesandme.com recipe contest. I won 1st prize and one of the prizes I received was your cookbook. I haven't received it yet, but after looking at your website, I am very excited. I have 3 daughters and my oldest is anaphylactic to egg, dairy and nuts. When she was diagnosed 6 years ago I had no idea what to feed her and the recipes I tried tasted like "allergy" food. Ever since, I've been working to find recipes that are safe for Jazzy but that are so yummy everyone can enjoy them. I just started a blog so that I can share my recipes with anyone who could benefit from them. Now I'm trying to find ways to get the word out so people can find me. Please take a look at my blog when you get a chance and if you like it, maybe you can add it to your blog list. I would love to talk to you sometime about how you published your cookbook. I've been trying and it is very difficult. Thanks again.

THanks so much Amy for your comment! I know you are going to LOVE the book! Rice milk should be perfectly fine but you must check with your pediatric allergist first. Coconut milk is another milk substitute that bakers love to use in place of soy milk. The water alone won't give the right consistency to most of the recipes I wrote. The recipes really need to be made exactly as written, or they won't have the same wonderful results. Check with your allergist and then let me know!

Hi Kelly,

I just purchased your baking book and plan to start trying recipes tomorrow! Yea! I am so excited to be able to have a treat that my son can have with me (allergic to milk, egg, peanut and soy). I have just one question if you have the time to answer. I notice that some of the recipes call for soy or rice milk. We can't do the soy yet and haven't been given the okay to try rice milk. Are there any subsitutes I could use for soy/rice milk? Can I just use water?

Thanks a bunch!

Love your baking book! I've made half the recipes since I got the cookbook for Christmas. I wanted to say congratulations about the recommendation for your cookbook in Parenting Magazine. That made me so excited for you!
